What is a SIM card and an eSIM?
The traditional SIM is the small plastic card that slots into your mobile phone and gives you access to your mobile network. It contains information such as your mobile number and enables you to make calls, send and receive SMSs, and use data on your phone. SIMS can also store data like your contacts.
The eSIM is a small chip embedded in your handset that you can’t remove from the device. eSIMs are based on a global standard that ensures they will work the same way across all smartphones and mobile network. With an eSIM in your smartphone, you can link multiple profiles to a single device.
Most phones that feature an eSIM also still include a dock for a traditional plastic SIM. It will be a while before the old-fashioned SIM disappears completely.
What are the advantages of an eSIM?
Switch networks more easily:
You no longer need to get a physical SIM to switch mobile networks. Your mobile network operator can onboard you remotely. Instead of needing to go to a store or wait for a delivery of a SIM, you could simply do everything online, including the FICA paperwork.
Sign up temporarily with another network:
You can store a few virtual SIM cards on a single eSIM. This means you can have a few profiles and contracts for different purposes. For example, if you’re travelling overseas, you can use your eSIM to get data with one of the local networks. Or if you’re going to a part of the country where a different network offers better coverage than your usual provider, you can temporarily change networks. There will be no need to swap SIM cards, reducing the risk of losing one of them.
Two numbers on your phone:
You can easily have two numbers on one phone. You can receive phone calls and texts on both numbers all the time and choose which SIM to use for making calls, sending text messages, or accessing data. This helps you to easily separate your business and home usage or to switch to a lower cost network without needing two devices or a dual-SIM phone.
Uses less physical space:
In times to come, eSIMs will eliminate the need to use precious space on the device for a physical SIM card and its tray. Smartphone manufacturers could use the space saving to increase battery size. This is also useful for devices such as smartphones and Internet of Things appliances.
Multiple devices on one contract:
eSIM technology makes it easier to add companion devices like smartwatches, tablets or your children’s phones to your existing contract or plan. The devices will be able to operate independently of your tethered smartphone and you’ll be able to monitor costs for each. But you’ll ultimately only need to manage one plan or contract.
