#WIB- Q&A With Mbali Madonsela Owner Of Zion Rose Rising
1. Can you please tell us more about your business?
A. The name of my business is called Zion Rose Rising, formerly Zion Rose Coach. It’s a life coaching consultancy aimed at giving black girl-children and women the life skills to self-partner, heal and turn their trauma into purpose.
2. When, how and why did you start your business?
A. I started my business October 22nd, 2019 and launched in December 7th, 2019. I have carried the vision for my business for about 16 years – This is when I embarked on my personal healing journey. I realised I needed to help women like me who have experienced childhood sexual trauma and are struggling to find help that works for them and their lives.
3. What is your role in the business?
A. It depends on the day. I mainly do everything from the planning, the ideation as well as organising. Occasionally when I have big projects such as events, consultancies, masterclasses or talks, I will outsource talent, collaborate with my peers or partner with thought leaders and businesses.
4. Where did you study and what did you study?
A. In order to coach professionally, I did a Life Coaching Course, specialising in Personal Development, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as well as Group Coaching at Lets Live Coaching and Action Factory respectively. I have a Media and PR background which I studied for at Boston Media House along with a Diploma in Arts from The Market Theatre.
5. How did you finance your business?
A. I used money that I made from being a freelance writer and content producer in the ad industry as well as savings and some loans.
6. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists.
A. That day obviously doesn’t exist and largely depends on what I have to do that day. The constant however, is that my day starts with me. Because the nature of my work is spiritually and emotionally charged, I make sure that I start my day with prayer, meditation and a workout. I will look at my diary and mentally map out my day which can including no more than 3 coaching sessions, creating content for social media, having meetings with potential sponsors and partners. I also try to find time to reading and studying on my chosen field.
7. How do you balance your home life and your work life?
A. I’ve recently understood deeply that my work comes from me, so If I am not fortified and whole, then the work that I do will not come from a healthy place. So lately I balance work and life by being kinder to myself, practicing self-care. Oh and I block out breaks in my diary so I have to take them.
8. What drives you and inspires you?
A. I am driven by healing. I am driven by women. I am inspired by the black person’s uncanny spirit to turn misfortune into a laugh, into a business or wealth. That’s what makes me believe that my community can heal and become better human beings because they were broken and not in spite of it.
9. Where and when do you have your best ideas?
A. Mornings. From 3am until 1pm. Usually after I have meditated and prayed.
10. Where and how do you market/advertise your business for sales leads?
A. It’s funny because pre-lockdown I relied solely on referrals and word-of-mouth. I had built such a strong community that supported my brand that it felt easy. Recently, I have been using more social media such as Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. I must admit however that the “connecter” in me really appreciates WhatsApp because it’s personal and raw.
11. What is next for your business?
A. The biggest vision I have for my brand is to create more platforms, more conversations and more spaces for black women and girls who carry unhealed trauma to feel safe and worthy enough to heal and tap into their own divinity. What that looks like, I don’t have a blue print that is set in stone but I know it’s going to be grand and beautiful to achieve and I can’t wait for each surprise.
12. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?
A. Start woman! LOL, I mean, start and make sure whatever you start comes straight from the heart. Even if it’s selling sweets make sure the reason for starting is a reason that stirs up your soul.
