#CareerFocus With Dr. Ntombifikile Mtshali CEO Of Shout-It-Now

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am Dr. Ntombifikile Mtshali, a medical doctor with a deep commitment to improving healthcare and advocating for women’s and reproductive health rights. I obtained my MBChB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2007 and hold an MBA from the Wits Business School. Currently, I serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Shout-It-Now, a non-profit organization providing youth-friendly, community-based HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health services in Gauteng and the North West provinces.

What work do you do?

As CEO of Shout-It-Now, I lead the organization in delivering modern HIV and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention services, particularly targeting vulnerable young women. My role involves advocating for accessible and quality healthcare, implementing innovative patient-centered initiatives, and addressing stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health.

How long have you been in the industry?

I have over 10 years of experience in the health sector, working as a clinician in both private and public settings. My journey has allowed me to blend clinical work with health service management, contributing to my current role as CEO.

Has your work always been your passion? Tell us why?

Absolutely, my work has always been my passion. I am deeply committed to championing the right to accessible and cost-effective quality healthcare for everyone. My advocacy for women’s reproductive health rights stems from a belief in the transformative power of healthcare in improving lives.

Being a woman in the industry – what does it take?

Being a woman in the industry requires resilience, advocacy, and a commitment to making a positive impact. It involves breaking barriers, addressing gender-specific health issues, and advocating for equitable access to healthcare.

What has been the most difficult challenge of your career?

One of the most challenging aspects has been leading initiatives that challenge the status quo, such as introducing Choice of Termination of Pregnancy services in line with the country’s legislation. Overcoming resistance and ensuring these services are accessible has been a significant challenge.

What advice do you have for other women in your industry?

My advice to fellow women in the industry is to be fearless advocates for change. Embrace challenges, champion inclusivity, and never underestimate the impact of your voice in shaping the future of healthcare. As women, we need to hold up so much for ourselves and for others, establish support networks for all areas of your life, whether in terms of motherhood, workplace, personal strength, our families and our communities. Remember, there’s no reward for sacrificing your own well-being in service to others. Serve compassion to others, but also with yourself.

Plans for the future?

Looking ahead, I am dedicated to advancing Shout-It-Now’s mission, expanding our reach, and continuing to innovate in HIV and GBV prevention services. Additionally, I will persist in my advocacy for community development, ensuring that quality healthcare remains at the forefront of our efforts.
